El Halev: Straight to the Heart

Since its foundation in 2003 El Halev has been striving to bring social change through empowering women and reducing violence. A NPO conceived by and for women El Halev provides training in the martial arts and self-defense offering an environment for women to grow physically, spiritually, mentally and socially.

When my older daughter decided to take self defense and martial arts at El Halev center, I didn't give it much thought. I knew she was physically fit and could learn a thing or two disciplining herself in the process. It took me a few weeks to realize the classes were not a mere physical training exercise. There was a message behind the more controlled body and the improved coordination.

My daughter was a teenager and I watched her growing into a woman. You may say, just like any young girl, there came her time to thrive. Well, let me tell you she thrived with a sidekick Bruce would not have been ashamed of. I am talking of Chloe Bruce of course, not the other Bruce. My kid was terrific and she knew it. This self confidence accompanied her many years after she stopped attending the classes and as a woman now in her late twenties she knows for a fact she can take care of herself.

Financial Independence for Women Victims of Violence
Ruach Nashit (Women's Spirit)is an Israeli registered association, which provides women victims of physical, sexual, mental and economic violence, the tools to become financially independent. We believe that for women to take control of their own lives, they must be able to financially support themselves and their children.

More on Ruach Nashit here.

A few months ago I visited the association's quarters in Tel Aviv and met its manager, Machi Neeman. Her determination to provide appropriate and valuable services to the women at Ruach Nashit literally lifted me off my feet. In fact, it is after this brief accounter with Machi, that I started to conceive in my head the idea of this blog dedicated to NPOs of the very kind of Ruach Nashit.

Ruach Nashit invites you to a special performance
On Sunday, November 22nd, 2009
at the Gesher theater (Noga), Jaffa at 8.30 PM.
with Ricky Gal, Marina Maximillian Blumin
and Yael Abecassis as host of ceremony.

You can support Ruach Nashit by sending a donation.

Counseling Center for Women (CCW)

CCW introduces itself as Israel’s only professional mental health center dedicated exclusively to the empowerment of women through psychotherapy and counseling.

Active for over 20 years, CCW supports women from all segments of Israeli society providing long-term therapy, training and educational programs, with an emphasis on helping women from lower socio-economic background.

I was genuinely impressed by the site of the association, which blends very precise and relevant information with a harmonious design.

I was wondering to myself "But what is feminist therapy and how different is it from regular therapy", when I clicked here and got my answer.

For more information visit CCW's site.

If you wish to promote an Israeli association dedicated to women's health and/or welfare issues, please send me the material.

Tair Rape Crisis Center

Once a week I walk into Tair Rape Crisis Center and attend my duty at the 1202 hotline. Two years ago, when I signed for the course to become a volunteer at the center, I was far from imagining the extent to which my life would take a new turn. The so dedicated staff at Tair Center has not only managed to warm my heart, it has actually changed its shape in the midst of its fifth decade.

Much has been said about receiving when giving, but volunteer work at Tair Rape Crisis Center is much beyond the cliche. It's about meeting strong women who choose to break the silence and strengthening yourself in the process. It's about opening your heart, offering compassion and comfort and irreversibly embracing your own life .

Founded in 1999, Tair Rape Crisis Center serves Israel’s coastal plain region, including Ashkelon, Ashdod, Ramle, Lod, Rehovot, and Kiryat Malachi, as well as a number of kibbutzim in the area.
